Is Your Flower Pot Full?

Miss Suzanne

Teaching our children, to tell the truth, comes through many lessons.  As a teacher and a parent, we must make sure the values we instill in our children will carry into their adulthood.

Kids can get used to even simple untruths because they become easy.  If they don’t admit to hitting someone, then they don’t get in trouble.  Not only kids but adults also need reminders about keeping an honest character.

Today in my book club we read The Empty Pot, an old folk tale about an Emporer who is looking for a child to take his throne when he retires.  Because he loves flowers, all the children are given seeds to plant.  The child who comes back in a year with the most beautiful plant will become the next Emporer.

Ping is a boy who loves growing flowers, plants, trees, etc. . He tries for a year to grow the seeds but they don’t grow. The other kids come back with beautiful flowers to show the Emperor.

Ping brings his empty pot, he showed his hard work but said no flowers would grow. The Emperor informs everyone the seeds were cooked, they never could grow flowers. Ping was the only one who told the truth. The others used seeds that they got somewhere else. Ping would win the honor of becoming the next Emperor.

When we teach our kids the rewards that come with the truth they will feel a sense of integrity.

What I love so much about books is that we can always find the perfect story to read over and over again. This book has a wonderful lesson not only about being honest but about hard work and taking pride in the things you love doing.

  1. What a great story about being truthful! Kids need to read this and see honesty being modeled by their parents too. As always, kids learn best by watching us 🙂

    1. Thank you for your comment folk tales always share great messages. The kids always ask so many questions! Like why an Emperor wore a dress? So many morals and history taught from this story.
