Try A Piece Of Enemy Pie

Miss Suzanne

When I asked the kids in my class what they would put in an enemy pie they quickly came up with ideas.  Worms, snails, dirt, legos, and other silly items.

This week’s book for book club was, Enemy Pie : (Reading Rainbow Book, Children’s Book about Kindness, Kids Books about Learning)

Finding creative ways to empower children to find solutions to problems is so important. As parents and teachers, it is easy to step in and help. When a child can recognize they can do it on their own what a powerful feeling.

In our story, the character is upset because a new child has moved into the neighborhood and has befriended his best friend. He watches the other two friends play and feels left out.

Jealousy is a new feeling for many children and becomes mistaken for sadness and anger. New emotions are not easy to understand.  When he confronts his Dad, they plan to make an enemy pie to get even.

While dad is making the pie, the son has gone to the enemy’s house. This is part of dad’s plan. After spending the day with the boy he realizes he really likes him.

When it is time to eat the enemy pie the boy yells for him to stop. The pie was delicious.

The father did not solve the problem for the son, he gave him an opportunity to discover a new friendship.  When we step in we don’t give our children the chance to see what they can do on their own. Giving them tools to try and solve problems builds self-confidence.

We can lead our children toward the direction we hope they follow.  Sometimes they will get there other times they may not.

In our journals, we drew pictures of yummy enemy pies.

If we fill our enemy pie with love, friendship, and strength, our children can change the world.

This book is wonderful for all ages and is one that you can read over and over again.
