P for President

Miss Suzanne blog

I remember when my son started to read, he was reading anything he could to see. We had walked into a building and he asked me if we needed to change all the doors when we elect a new President.  I asked him why he would ask me that question. He told me because all the doors were named after “bush”, I laughed and told him it said, “push”. He sighed a big sound of relief and said “whew, I thought every time we get a new President we had to change all the names on the door”.

Beside teaching my son the difference between a b and p what age do we teach our kids about our Presidential election. When do they begin to understand what the election process is all about. Especially when they hear parents talking about it.

Obviously my son had heard the name Bush and associated it with President. Did I need to explain more? Was he too young to understand our “adult” world. Or was his generation going to need to be eased into what was ahead?

Our young kids live in a world where they are developing through play. There brains are building by using Legos and building blocks.  Where do politics come in?

Driving down the streets and watching people carry election signs and sit at tables decorated like a carnival booth with no toys. Do we tell our little ones about Democrate vs Rebublican when they are still deciding between peanut butter or jelly?

On November 3, I told my class it was a very special day. I told them we were having an election for President of the United States. They shouted with cheers, it was funny and awesome. They had no idea why they were so excited. We talked about what the President does, than we practiced our own election.

Our election was voting on new class rules. I had them raise there hand if they thought chocolate in class was a good idea…. It was a overwhelming majority win!

I spent this week doing projects that were red, white and blue.  Here is what my political teaching will be….I will instill what our kids need. Love, respect, honesty, friendship, and loyalty. The qualities that make a good human and that will allow them the freedom to make there own choices when the time comes and they are ready….maybe one day…. There name will be on all the doors. For now.. They will play, smile, laugh…and run free.

That is the way childhood should be ❤️
